Azithromycin is a semi-synthetic subclass of macrolide antibiotics. It is derived from erythromycin in 1980. The FDA approved azithromycin in November 1991. All this years Azithromycin was effectively used.
Spectrum of azithromycin use is very wide. It includes the sexually transmitted disease (STD) Chlamydia and Gonorrhea partly. Chlamydia does not exhibit symptoms in 90% of men and 75% of women. That is why Chlamydia is called "silent". Also symptoms of Chamydia is vary between men and women. Women could carry the bacteria for months, it infect the cervix and the urine canal.
Men's symptoms are a penis discharge, a burning sensation when urinating, itching around the opening of the penis. Pain and swelling in the testicles are uncommon.
Azithromycin blocks the actions of certain proteins that Chlamydia trachomatis needs. Bacteria can not grow and multiply without the proteins. The rest of bacteria are killed off by the body's immune system when the spread of the infection is stopped.
Azithromycin is also used while treating Gonorrhea if Chlamydia is also diagnosed. But it is not recommended as monotherapy in this case because if rick to increase bacterial resistance to azithromycin and other macrolide antibiotics.

Dosage and direction.
Tablets come in doses of azithromycin 250mg and azithromycin 500mg.
For uncomplicated cases of Chlamydia standard dose is 1 gram single. If your symptoms is not gone in 48 hours you should get yourself checked for gonorrhea.
Azithromycin may be taken with or without food. Take the medicine with food if it upsets your stomach.
Azithromycin side effects.

diarrhea (5%);
stomach pain (3%);
nausea (3%);
chest pain with uneven heartbeats (1%);
cholestatic jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) (less then 1%).
Less serious azithromycin side effects are:
stomach pain;
dizziness or headache;
insomnia;
vaginal itching;
hearing problems;
decreased sense of taste or smell.
